Bethaniestraat 38 is for sale together with the house at Baselaarsstraat 2. Those houses are two of the six national monuments in total, which follow the slightly curved shape of the Baselaarsstraat and have a surrounding corner building in the Bethaniëstraat.

The houses were designed by the architect J.J. van Dillen (architect of the Bossche Almshouses) and are unique for the city of 's-Hertogenbosch with regards to both location and architecture. The house dates from 1933 and has a functionalistic design. The entire detailing is balanced, as evidenced by the location and dimensions of the steel frames placed in the facades, further enhanced by the colors used. Partially for this reason, the total complex has a brightness that fits well into the differently designed environment.


Ground floor:

Entrance hall with separate toilet and access to the basement. The spacious cellar is man-sized and can be used multifunctionally. Living room with French doors, reading room, closed kitchen with L-shaped arrangement and built-in appliances. Spacious bedroom with bathroom with shower and washbasin. The garage is accessible from the outside.


Internally, various renovations have taken place over the years. The house is also equipped with post-insulation of the roof and the house is partially equipped with double glazing.


In the 1920s Reinier van Arkel wished expansion to improve the separation between men and women. At the same time, the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch had plans to remediate the old working-class district of Diep- and Windmolenbergstraat, on which Reinier van Arkel had traditionally owned a few plots. Defense had also left the dating St. Jacob barracks. The regents sold the plots to the municipality and bought the former St. Jacobs barracks from the municipality, with the exception of the old St. Jacobs Church, which had already been taken into use by the Provincial Society of Arts and Sciences. According to the arrangement with the municipality, the Godshuizen were allowed to build 5 houses and an office on a narrow strip of land on the Baselaarsstraat.


The villas, designed by the architect of the Almshouses Jan van Dillen, were built in 1933 and were intended for the higher officials of the Almshouses. The 5 villas are identical and are built in the style of the "Nieuwe Bouwen". The facades are built up high and the pent roofs slope strongly to the rear. A special feature of the rear facade is that there are no windows because the houses at the back adjoin the garden of the Reinier van Arkel site. Above the front doors are polychrome glazed reliefs, depicting: a sunflower (no.2), an owl (no.4), a flower (no.6), the Holy Ghost (no.8) and a French Lily (no. 10). The architect himself lived at Baselaarsstraat 2 and had his office space at Bethaniëstraat 38. The office space also served as an office for the technical service of the Godshuizen for a long time. These villas and ex-offices have been listed as monuments since 1999. The name Baselaarsstraat still recalls a monastery that stood here several centuries ago.


The house is located in a nice and well-known pre-war residential area with characteristic houses, on a spacious residential street (paid parking, permit) a short distance from schools, shops, sports facilities, roads, public transport, the city center, Zuiderpark and nature reserve “Het Bossche Broek”.
